Puppies

The puppies whelped at Trout Creek are gently handled and observed many times each day from birth until they leave for their new homes.  The puppies are handled by our two children and myself for the first three weeks.  By the fourth week, the puppies are meeting several new people each day, being exposed to different locations on the farm, walking on several different surfaces, and spending some time each day in a play area which includes tunnels, hanging toys, a teeter-totter, a swing, and open crates.  We spend many hours each day observing and handling each puppy and making notes.  By eight weeks, the pups have been on several car rides, exposed to all of our other dogs and farm animals.  By eight weeks of age they have met at least 50 different people and have been introduced to a wide variety of sights and sounds and are well prepared to make the transition into their new homes.  The puppies are temperament tested between seven and eight weeks and then evaluated for structure and breed type at eight weeks.  The pups are placed according to the best matches between their temperaments and personalities and the needs of the family based on many conversations during the weeks prior to placement.  We feel that it is extremely important to match the right puppy with the right family and encourage my puppy buyers to be totally honest with me and with themselves about what they are looking for in an adult dog.  Adding a GSMD to your family is a commitment for the life of the dog!

Procedures for Obtaining a Puppy from Trout Creek

We encourage all prospective puppy buyers to contact and visit with as many breeders as possible and not limit themselves to local breeders only.  After visiting several breeders, choose one or two that you feel have the priorities that you are looking for.  It is important to work with a breeder that you are totally comfortable with and that will be available to you for the entire life of your Swissy.

We interview prospective buyers to determine if our priorities and what we produce are what they are looking for.  If not, we refer them to other breeders.  We encourage those who are interested in our breeding program and that we feel would make a good match for one of our puppies to stay in contact.  We do not maintain a specific "waiting list" and do not take deposits. When we have selected a sire for an upcoming breeding, we provide a litter information packet that includes pedigrees, copies of health clearances, information the titles of the parents, photos and an application and a sample copy of my contract.  Continued contacts and conversations help me determine if we have the right puppy for the specific home.  We do not make final decisions until after eight weeks and the puppies have been temperament tested and had their structural evaluations.

We will occasionally place a puppy as breeding/show quality but most are placed as pet/companions on spay neuter contracts.  The reason being that we want only exceptional quality from our kennel being shown and/or used in a breeding program.

Once again, thank you for visiting our web site and investigating our breeding program.  We welcome all inquiries and will do our best to answer any questions that you may have.  Good luck in your search for the right dog for you!
